The Challenge
Multnomah County’s Employee Wellness Program was navigating a season of significant change. Like many public sector organizations, their countywide workforce was experiencing transition fatigue, uncertainty, and mounting stress especially among frontline staff and leadership teams. They needed a workshop that not only named what was hard, but also gave people real tools to stay grounded and connected.

Social Worker Appreciation of Greatness
The S.W.A.G (Social Worker Appreciation of Greatness) Awards Ceremony was established after an online celebration of historical African American social workers during Black History Month and local social workers during National Social Work Month by Vitamin C Healing. They reached out to community leaders in various sectors to gather nominations for local social workers who have made a positive impact in Greater Pittsburgh.
Through social media, 19 social workers were recognized for their selflessness, integrity, compassion, competence, and commitment to the profession. In March 2019, an intimate gathering was held to honor these individuals with certificates of appreciation.
The mission of the annual SWAG Awards is to celebrate the often-overlooked work of social workers who embody servant leadership through advocacy, social justice, generational healing, and community empowerment.

Professionals in helping fields rely on empathy to connect with and support clients. However, constantly taking on others’ emotional burdens can lead to empathy fatigue, where the helper’s own emotional reserves are drained by “feeling with” their clients.
