Keeping Your Joy and Purpose

As the days grow shorter so does our patience with others. For some time, the pressure has been building and our emotions have fluctuated between fear, worry, anger, hurt, apathy, hopelessness, and anticipation. Waiting has become the new norm for everything. What used to take hours, now seems to take days, weeks, or months. This added waiting has caused excess pressure on people from all industries including healthcare, food service, transportation, etc.

The rate of burnout has reached an all-time high. So now we must shift our focus and work on keeping people from losing their sense of purpose or joy for their work. This is often referred to as “Compassion Fatigue”. Treating the symptoms of compassion fatigue is possible when we focus on “The 5 Pillars of Self-Care.”

  1. Basic needs – reduce the vulnerability rate by eating a balanced, nutritious diet, getting restful sleep, and exercising regularly.

  2. Values – rely on your integrity, family, and community to keep yourself aligned with work and life balance.

  3. Boundaries – set emotional boundaries to protect yourself. Show empathy and compassion without taking on the pain of others.

  4. Self-compassion – show yourself grace and recognize that no one is perfect. Care for yourself the same way you care for others.

  5. Relaxation – Take regular mental breaks throughout the day. This can include listening to your favorite song, taking a walk, or repeating a positive mantra.

The symptoms of compassion fatigue can arise abruptly, so it is important to practice self-care. Please make you take advantage of all the resources available at vitmainchealing.com, especially the free downloadable list of non-negotiable self-care activities. The Compassion Fatigue virtual workshop is another great resource for teams.
